Just One New Years Promise

The start of a new year is almost always a time of reflection and resolution. Last year's regrets and questions are pondered while new ambitions are initiated. Unfortunately, these objectives are often forgotten by February when life's hectic pace just takes over. People often feel overwhelmed by all there is to do.

Sometimes the employees at SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove feel the weight of environmental stewardship as well - much has been accomplished, but so many conservation and sustained usage challenges remain. Taken as a whole, it is difficult to find a place to start.

If, however, each one of us takes specific small steps towards our goals, we can reach them. Instead of not doing anything at all, or trying to do too much then giving up after the first month or so, try doing things just one step at a time. Some will stick, and you may find you do it more often out of habit; others may take some work, but you'll feel terrific about being able to persevere towards attaining those specific goals you set. Each small step you take gets you closer to your target.

To reach our personal aspirations, it is mostly up to each one of us individually. We often don't think about improving the state of the earth in quite the same way, but it's true. To make an environmental difference, each one of us needs to contribute at least a little bit. The employees of the Anheuser Busch Adventure Parks are committed to the company's pledge of making a positive environmental difference through guest education and inspiration, scientific research and species breeding programs, reduced consumption of resources, increased recycling, and rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine and terrestrial animals. If all people did just a little bit more than what they are currently doing to help animals and the environment, it would make a huge difference - after all, there are over six billion of us!

This year, let's include one promise to the planet on our list of resolutions - to do just a little bit more this year than last, in our ability to conserve resources and protect life. Here are some specific ideas:

  • Reduce your use of household pesticides.
  • Dispose of toxic substances like paint, used car oil, and cleaning products properly.
  • Utilize a re-useable shopping bag.
  • Take a shorter shower than usual at least one time a week to save water.
  • Carpool or bike to work one more time a week than you do now.
  • Eat vegetarian at least one time per day.
  • Besides depositing trash where it belongs, pick up some trash you see along walking paths, on the beach, or in your neighborhood.
  • Become an informed consumer - know where the products you buy come from. Many plants, animals, and habitats are negatively affected by our demands for possessions like ivory, fur and jewelry.
  • Join a conservation organization such as World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, National Wildlife Federation or Nature Conservancy.
  • Let your elected representatives know where you stand on environmental issues.

Have a happy, thoughtful and remarkable new year!
